The Medical Education Unit (MEU) of Government Medical College and New Civil Hospital Surat was established in 2009 as per the directions of Medical Council of India. The unit started with the initial efforts of conducting regular faculty development programs (FDPs) for teaching faculty of the institute.

The main objectives of the department of Education are :

To train faculties in advanced teaching ,learning and assessment methodologies. To be responsible for all educational processes at GMC Surat To provide oversight on the educational activities of the medical college (UG &PG) . To plan, implement and evaluate curricular development and faculty development in the medical college in alignment with the Medical Council of India initiatives. Ensure curriculum development through the curriculum committee. Ensure Faculty development by conducting Faculty development programs and workshops through the Faculty development committee. Help develop specialized educational labs, like Skills lab, Simulation Centre, Communication labs etc Facilitate educational research through projects, research publication and Ph.d course. Keep the medical college updated of the current trends in Medical education by conducting workshops and conferences. Provide an educational platform for national and international networking and collaboration. Offer courses in Medical education. To extend help to the faculty to undergo advanced courses in medical education. To ensure continuous quality improvement in Medical education

Functioning and activities: 1. Meetings: MEU meetings are convened 7 times a year. Need based additional meetings are also convened. Predetermined agenda circulated to all members, deliberate on agenda issues during meeting followed by action taken reports circulated to members. 2. Annual Revised basic course workshops: Organized as per Nodal centre and Medical council of India directions 3. Orientation and induction programs and Foundation course: conducted annually for all fresher’s, clinical phase and final year medical students 4. Post Graduate orientation and research methodology workshops: conducted annually for every batch of post graduates at the beginning of the course of masters degree and diploma in all subjects. 5. Development of in-house E-learning modules for under graduates: software based training and evaluation of students in multiple choice, problem/scenario/case based learning questions. 6. Feedback collection and evaluation: collection and evaluation from all batches of outgoing students done and corrective measures suggested wherever required. 7. Advanced course in medical education: faculty of the institute encouraged to undergo advanced training in medical education at nodal centre to which the institute is affiliated. 8. Other programs like Integration, Professionalism , MCQ writing, etc|
