It was held at night, followed by dinner. It was attended by 150+ participants, which included Psychiatrists, MBBS doctors, other specialists and resident doctors. Participants remained interested till 12 midnight, after stimulating discussions and question answer session. After prayer, lamp lighting, Master of ceremony Dr. Pooja Shatadal welcomed all speakers and officials in the Dais. All were felicitated. Dr. Ritambhara Mehta, Dean, Professor and Head of Psychiatry, GMCS moderated the whole program. She introduced the subject with giving magnitude of Alcohol problem worldwide, WHO GLOBAL Status report and closer to us, Indian and Gujarat State data. Despite prohibition since 1960, the state has seen increasing number of patients with Alcohol problems. 50 % or more of Health consultations in hospitals are directly or indirectly linked with Alcoholism, and huge Health budget is spent on it. AA member from Mumbai shared his life experiences with Alcohol. He was candid and revealing in sharing How devastating the life becomes with Alcohol. This set the tone of the session. Dr. Ashish Deshpande, Consultant Psychiatrist from Mumbai talked about how Alcohol changes the Neurophysiology and Neurochemistry in brain at Neurotransmitter, Cell membrane and Molecular levels. He gave lucid presentation on managing Alcohol problems. He also shared his experience of managing ALCOHOL problems with Social intervention like Alcoholics Anonymous self-help group. Dr. Kamlesh Dave, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry talked on Presentations of Alcohol problems, and importance of Assessment. Dr. Vinesh Shah, Consultant Forensic Medicine expert candidly talked about the Alcohol and Law, how prohibition is a situation, where the law is broken every minute. He talked on the Guidelines for doctors for Assessing persons brought as Medicolegal cases, and who come for Alcohol permit. The importance of documentation, and ethical judgment on advice for Alcohol are pertinent issues in the medical practice. At the end, panel answered the questions of the audience.
