Department of TB & Chest(pulmonary medicine)

Introduction

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine has been functioning successfully since the inception of GMC, Surat in the initial years as an extension of Medicine Department and later on as an independent unit since October, 1999. Within a short period of time, this department has proved its vitality in providing quality care and treatment for a huge number of patients suffering from Tuberculosis and other respiratory ailments. We provide our services not only to the patients from South Gujarat but also to the neighbouring states. The department has also progressed in its academic achievements as our PG courses (M.D. TB & Chest Diseases and Diploma TB & Chest diseases) started in the year 2008 and were recognised by the MCI in 2012. All the staff members are enthusiastic working for the constant betterment of patient care and hospital facilities.

  1. Diagnosis and treatment of Tuberculosis under RNTCP guidelines
  2. GeneXpert Laboratory for the diagnosis of Drug-Resistant TB using CB-NAAT ( Cartridge Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test)
  3. Separate DOTS Plus ward for the Programmatic Management of MDR-TB. This is the only specialized center in South Gujarat.
  4. IRL (Intermediate Reference Laboratory) will soon be added to our setup.
  5. Pulmonary Function Testing and Inhalational Therapy for Obstructive Airway Diseases are available on OPD basis.
  6. Video Assisted Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy.
  7. Whole Body Plethesmography for DLCO.
  8. Polysomnographic Study for diagnosis of Sleep Disorders.
  9. Lung Biopsy for the diagnosis of Lung Tumors.
  10. Non-Invasive Ventilation Therapy available.

We observed and celebrated the World TB day on 24th March, 2015 with the slogan “Reach the 3 million” and spread awareness to the common people. We also observed the World Asthma Day on 6th May,2014 , the World COPD Day on 19th Nov, 2014 and World Lung Cancer Day on 1st August,2014. Pneumovac and influenza vaccines are administered to COPD,Elderly and Immunocompromised Patients on regular basis in indoor as well OPD patients.

  • This department believes in providing quality care and treatment for patients suffering from Tuberculosis and other respiratory ailments.
  • The facilities of the department are not just limited to the management of Tuberculosis(including MDR & XDR-TB management) but also includes sleep medicine, Bronchoscopy, DLCO and Body Plethesmography.
  • We provide our services not only to the patients from South Gujarat but also to the neighbouring states.
  • The department is very active in following the educational guidelines of MCI aiding in the overall academic development of the students.
  • We strongly support for the constant better care of patients and hospital facilities.

  • To deal with TB cases including extra-pulmonary Tb cases with Initiation of Treatment according to Category under DOTS.
  • Daily management of other Chest diseases, Asthma, COPD,pneumonia, Bronchiectasis, ILD, Cor-Pulmonale, Lung abcess, Pleural Diseases.
  • To deal with references from other departments.
  • Daily Spirometry in indicated patients.
  • MT Test
  • Immunization with Pneumovax & Influenza Vaccine.
  • Ultrasonic Nebulization for OPD patients.
  • Education for Inhalational Therapy.
  • Management of Complicated pulmonary TB, Hydropneumothorax, Pleural Effusion, Hemoptysis etc.
  • Other Chest diseases, Asthma, COPD, Pneumonia, Bronchiectasis, ILD, Cor-Pulmonale, Lung abcess, Pleural Diseases.
  • Management of Lung Carcinoma in collaboration with LCDC.
  • Diagnosis and Management of OSA, performing sleep study twice a week.
  • Daily Spirometry, DLCO & body plethesmography in indoor indicated patients.
  • Flexible Bronchoscopy in indicated patients on regular basis.
  • MT Test
  • Immunization with Pneumovax & Influenza Vaccine.
  • USG guided fluid Aspiration and CT guided Lung Biopsy in Indicated patients.
  • Central oxygen line and O2 concentrator facilities are available.

ADDITIONAL WORK

  • On OPD basis, we daily do average 40 sputum Examination for AFB smear.
  • Suspected MDR-TB patient’s specimen sent to IRL for Culture and DST.
  • We have the facility at our DTC site of GeneXpert Laboratory for the diagnosis of Drug-Resistant TB using CB-NAAT.(Cartridge Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test)
  • We have DRTB centre(J4 Ward) catering all Districts of South Gujarat doing management of confirmed MDR-TB cases (Pulmonary + Extrapulmonary TB cases) like Initiation of Treatment, management of Adverse Drug Reactions and Management of Other Complications.
