Introduction
The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy was established at Government Medical College, Surat in 1967 and the Post Graduate centre was started in 1982.As the branch of dermatology has evolved immensely over the years, the department at Government Medical College, Surat has grown beyond leaps and bounds. The newer equipments and techniques are being introduced in the department at a scorching pace. The department now boasts of being in the elite list of very few colleges in the Government set up possessing CO2 LASER, Diode Laser, Long Pulsed Nd YAG LASER, Skin USG. We are seeing almost 450-500 outdoor patients daily and the number of indoor patients is 20-30 per month on an average apart from the references from various departments of New Civil Hospital, Surat.

Services provided by the Department
- PSORIASIS CLINIC: Average of 70-100 new and old cases of psoariasis are treated with various modalities like PUVA, NBUVB, methotrexate, immunomodulators, and various topical preparations per month.
- VITILIGO & PIGMENTORY CLINIC: The various new and old modalities of treatment with surgical procedures like STG, Suction blister technique, Punch grafting.
- LEPROSY CLINIC: On an average 15-20 new cases are diagnosed and 40-50 old cases are treated with Anti-Leprosy Treatment Kit supplied at the department clinic.
- STD CLINIC & COUNSELLING CENTRE: The dept is fully verse with the diagnosis and treatment of various STD’s and offers treatment kit with a counsellor in the opd.
- ACNE CLINIC: The various topical and oral preparations are prescribed and acne surgeries like comedone extraction, subcission etc are frequently performed in the department.
- CONTACT DERMATITIS CLINIC: Patients of various occupations presenting with dermatitis are investigated for various contact agents & treatment prescribed accordingly.
- VESICULOBULLOUS CLINIC: Periodic follow up of patients of various vesiculobullous diseases is done & management is done based on response to treatment and other symptoms.
- AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES CLINIC: Patients of various autoimmune diseases are educated about their condition, explained methods of self care, monitoring and other recent advances in management.
