Department of Pharmacology

Department of Pharmacology in GMC Surat , from inception, is striving hard towards attaining excellence in academics and research. This department takes pride in conducting Interactive teaching and small group lectures, so that more personnel attention is given to students. Pharmacology as a subject is taught to students of MBBS-II, B.PTh, Nursing and DMLT. Currently five Post Graduate students are trained in Pharmacology every year.

This Department has taken strong initiative to establish a culture of Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting in the college and hospital. We have conducted workshops and training sessions at College level and at various Clinical departments regarding implementation of Pharmacovigilance Programme of India.

We carry out Prescription Audit in the clinical departments frequently.

Faculties from this Department are actively involved in various working committees in the college.Previous Head of the Department, Dr N. D. Kantharia, as a member of Medical Education Unit of the college has trained the maximum number of faculties,next only to Pramukhswamy Medical College, Karamsad, in Medical Education, in Gujarat state.

KNOWLEDGE

  1. Describe the pharmacokinetics &pharmacodynamic properties of essential & commonly used drugs.
  2. Understand the indications & contraindications, interactions and adverse reactions of commonly used drugs & precautions to be observed while using those drugs.
  3. Develop full understanding about the use of appropriate drugs, efficacy, safety, convenience, cost in diseases.
  4. Understand the pharmacological basis & clinical presentation, diagnosis, management of common poisonings.
  5. Understanding the drugs of addiction and management strategies of the same.
  6. Classify environmental & occupational pollutants and consider the management strategy for the same.
  7. Understanding the precautions to be taken while using drugs in pregnancy, lactation, geriatric and paediatric patients.
  8. Understanding the concept of rational drug therapy.
  9. Understanding the concept of essential drugs.
  10. Understanding the process of new drug development.

SKILL

  1. Prescribe the drug accurately for common ailments
  2. Recognize adverse reactions and interactions of commonly used drugs
  3. Understand the experimental designs for study of the effects of the drug & develop
  4. Critically analyse the given prescription for the given problem considering the principles of rational therapy
  5. Scan information on common pharmaceutical preparations and critically evaluate the drug formulations
